Costs
API or monthly subscription?
A fixed fee is comfortable; an API can be more affordable or more controllable if the task is small, repeated and measurable.
- Frequency
- Expense control
- Maintenance
- Plan B
Quick rule
Subscription if you work many hours in chat. API if you have a specific, automatable, and clearly budgeted task.
When does the subscription win?
When you need a list interface, history, files, integrated tools and flexible usage without technical setup.
When does the API win?
When the task is repeated the same way many times: text classification, form summary, internal draft generation or integrating AI into your own tool.
What do you need to use API without hassle?
Monthly limit, call registration, real example tests, error control and a way to stop the process. If a task is multiplied by accident, the cost also multiplies.
Simple example
If you only need to summarize twenty texts a month, an API with limits may be sufficient. If you make different questions every day, upload files and need to review ideas, a subscription to chat may be more comfortable.
Risk
An unlimited API can be expensive; a subscription without review can be forgotten. In both cases, set a review date.
