Costs
How much does an AI tool really cost?
A cheap tool can become expensive if it forces you to repeat instructions, correct too much or pay multiple overlapping subscriptions.
- Quota
- Correction
- Limits
- Cancellation
Simple formula
Real cost = monthly fee + correction time + file transfer time + error risk + forgotten cancellation cost.
Free doesn't always win
A free plan may be enough for occasional use. If the task is daily and limits hold you back, paying can save time. The key is to measure if the limit blocks a real task or just annoys you because you're trying it out of curiosity.
When to look at API?
For repeated and small tasks, an API can be better than a fixed quota, as long as someone controls expenses, errors, and maintenance. If there is no expense control or nobody can maintain the flow, the API may cost more than a normal subscription.
What hidden costs appear?
Time to learn the tool, prompts that need to be rewritten, files that don't fit, answers that require double review, annual renewal and loss of history if you switch services. All that counts.
Practical Decision
If a tool saves less than one hour a month and costs a fixed fee, wait. If it saves several hours or avoids important errors, try a month with a cancellation date noted.
